Films

• My friend's father was marched from Hungary to Mauthausen in Austria. And from there to Gunskirchen nearby where the American liberated them. On the way to Mauthausen, near the Austrian village/town Rechnitz, they were made to dig long furrows into which most of them were shot . He is one of the few survivors. Two Austrian filmmakers made a documentary film about this a few years ago, called _Totschweigen_, in English _Wall of Silence_. (they focused on the silence of the locals, but interviewed the few survivors too, and the way they found them after all those years is quite amazing)
• "The Kastner Trial" (3and a half hrs.) film about a Hungarian Jew who negotiated with the Nazis to save thousands of Jews, but was tried in 1954 in Israel for collaborating.

• THE HOLOCAUST/GENOCIDE PROJECT
  The Holocaust/Genocide Project (HGP) is an international, nonprofit, telecommunications project focusing on the study of the Holocaust and other genocides. A project of the International Education and Resource Network (I*EARN), the HGP involves schools in the United States, Israel, Australia, Argentina, Bulgaria, Belarus, Russia, Poland, South Africa, Germany, Slovakia, the Netherlands, and Estonia. The purpose of the HGP is to promote education and awareness of the Holocaust and genocide. We encourage the application of this knowledge in a way that makes a positive difference in the world. The HGP offers a curriculum-focused project catering to multi- and interdisciplinary education. Specifically, they offer:

• The November Pogrom I have been informing the American public of the origin of the euphemism "crystalnight" or the "night of the broken glass." These terms have been used without any knowledge of the events surrounding a most tragic event in recent history. I am referring to the Nazi pogrom of November, 1938. I'll never forget the morning of November 10, 1938, 60 years ago, when I saw my synagogue in Breslau in flames. It was only in the late 1980s, during the research for my book Shanghai Refuge (Nebraska University Press, 1993/1995), that I discovered that historians and other knowledgeable persons around the world have used the term The November Pogrom. The term Reichskristallnacht was coined on November 12, 1938, by Reichsmarshall Hermann Gvring during a meeting with high level party functionaries. By emphasizing the relative triviality of broken glass in the streets, Gvring diverted the world's attention from the terrorism perpetrated by the SA Sturmabteilung, the destruction of almost 1,000 synagogues and the incarceration of about 30,000 men. The glass damage exceeded six-months' production of the entire European glass industry, but it certainly is not representative of this most vicious and devastating pogrom in all of Jewish history. It appears that the international press did not investigate the source of the censored German press release, consequently many people for the past 59 years continued to use the term invented by Gvring. Reichskristallnacht meant to be a Spottname, a name of ridicule, of mockery, perpetuating the Nazis' delight in breaking millions of marks worth of store windows of Jewish-owned stores. The second sentence of this chapter begins: "Der Novemberpogrom, als "Reichskristallnacht" im Umgangston verniedlicht..." (The Novemberpogrom was "prettified" in the vernacular as "crystal night.") Chapter 6, entitled "Die "Kristallnacht" als Anfang vom Ende", (crystal night as the beginning of the end) starts: "Man kann den Novemberpogrom als ein Ritual vffentlicher Dem tigung deuten... (The November pogrom can be explained as a ritual for public humiliation...) The photograph accompanying this chapter is titled: Vielleicht gab das zersplitterte Glass Anlass zu dem Spottnamen Reichskristallnacht. (Perhaps the broken glass was used to ridicule the pogrom). Arnold Paucker's The Jews in Nazi Germany, T bingen: J.C.B. Mohr, 1986, page 220: "Der Novemberpogrom, euphemistisch "Kristallnacht" genannt, war der Anfang vom Ende...." (The Novemberpogrom euphemistically named "Crystal Night" was the beginning of the end.) In 1989 the Israeli German language paper reports on a day of studies in Ramat Ephal zum Andenken an das Novemberpogrom 1938, (to remember the Novemberpogrom of 1938). The article was headlined: 50 Jahre (50 years) Novemberpogrom, 1938-1988. In the German newspaper Der Oberurseler Kurier, 13. November 1993, the historian Angelika Rieber writes "Die Novemberpogrome waren ein tiefer Schnitt in das Leben der Juedischen Buerger..." (The November pogroms deeply affected the life of the Jewish citizens.) The National edition of the Jewish Post & Opinion states: "This issue is being published on the 55th anniversary of the November Pogrom, when Hitler formally began the Holocaust by launching a national wave of arrests, looting and destruction of synagogues...Nazis termed the attack Kristallnacht, as if it had been merely a matter of breaking windows." The weekly publication of the German information center reports in its Novem ber, 1994, issue: ...November 9-10 is also the anniversary of the 1938 pogrom called euphemistically by the Nazis "Reichskristallnacht" or "Night of the Broken Glass," the night Nazi mobs attacked Jews, synagogues, and Jewish owned business throughout Germany...
